On the night of the winter solstice,
the longest night of the year,
we keep vigil with one another.
We acknowledge the shadows of the Holiday season,
even as we long and wait for the light.
We know that darkness is a place of
gestation and germination, not evil.
“This darkness,” as Jan Richardson writes,
“Can become the tending place in which all our
longings for healing, justice,
and peace grow and come to birth.”
