The Knox Music Series continues its series with a powerful afternoon of choral and organ masterworks titled “Songs of Praise: The Te Deum.” The concert will take place on Sunday, March 8th, at 3:00 PM at Knox Presbyterian Church in Hyde Park (3400 Michigan Ave, Cincinnati, OH 45208). Details

The performance will be led by Knox’s Interim Director of Music, Matthew Swanson. A prominent figure in the Cincinnati arts scene, Swanson also serves as the Director of Choruses for the Cincinnati May Festival, where he oversees the choral ensembles for the oldest choral festival in the Western Hemisphere. His leadership at Knox continues to bridge the gap between historic liturgical tradition and world-class musical execution.

The program centers on the Te Deum, an ancient Latin hymn of praise that has inspired composers for centuries. Featured works include the lush, mid-century Anglican sounds of Herbert Howells’ Te Deum and Jubilate (Collegium Regale) and the virtuosic Te Deum for Organ by French composer Jeanne Demessieux, performed by Knox Organist Dr. Christina Haan.

In addition to these hymns of praise, the Knox Choir and chamber orchestra will perform Johann Sebastian Bach’s Cantata No. 6, Bleib bei uns, denn es will Abend werden (“Bide with us, for evening shadows darken”).

“This program is a celebration of light and enduring praise,” says Matthew Swanson. “From the intricate polyphony of Bach to the soaring heights of Howells, these works represent the very best of the sacred choral canon. We are especially excited to showcase the power of the Knox organ and choir in such a resonant space.”

As with all installments of the Knox Music Series, admission is free and open to the public.
